WICE World Watch is a platform for the exchange of ideas and information. Our events in 2012 promise independent, timely and informative coverage on the most current topics.

Please mark your calendar for Tuesday, January 10th as we present "The Role of France in Europe and Trans-Atlantic Relations", a dialog and debate lead by CNN's Senior European Correspondent, Jim Bitterman and France 24's Jean Lesieur. Both gentlemen will bring 30 plus years of reporting world events as they have played out from Paris to this event. Their insight and experience is sure to engage and enlighten as they address the role France is playing both here in the European Union and on the world stage.

Drop by on Tuesday and Friday afternoons to exchange conversation with native French and English speakers.

Every year, the Americans in our conversation groups are asked to describe the history and traditions of our holiday, Thanksgiving.

We all have a slightly different story to tell. In different parts of the country, the holiday is celebrated with different types of food and in different ways. It also depends on what we were taught in school about the history of this holiday.

Some families watch football on TV, some visit with family and friends. Some families eat the same food every year and some families experiment with new dishes. Each family has their distinct traditions.

If you come to the groups before Thanksgiving, don't forget to ask several different people about their traditions.

You might find this "tongue in cheek" (not serious) article about the holiday that was published in the NY Times a few years ago. It was written by the late Art Buchwald.

The Maison Paroissiale will be closed on Tuesday, November 22 and Friday, November 25.

We will meet at the café, Bistrot du 15, at the corner of Rue de l'Eglise and Ave Felix Faure both days from 4:15 to 5:45 PM.

Our annual Noël Sing-Along and Gouter will be held on Friday, December 2.

The conversation groups will be held from 4:15 to 5:15 PM.

The Gouter (pot luck) and Sing-Along will start at 5:30 PM. Bring a dish to share or a bottle of wine.

Then, we will sing holiday songs, lead by our WICE musicians.

The songs are in French and English.

WICE Conversation Group Rentrée

The WICE French-English Conversation Groups will start on Friday, September 16, 2011.

Groups will be held on Tuesdays and Fridays from 4 PM to 5:30 PM.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A NEW TIME.

Also, the WICE Open House will be held on Tuesday, September 20 from 2 to 6 PM at the American Church.

There will not be a conversation group on that day. You can go to the Open House and participate in a conversation group during the Open House.

We have a few suggestions that we think will make the groups more productive and enjoyable:

Prepare for each group
•Bring several topics for discussion, be prepared with the vocabulary associated with this topic
•Bring a newspaper article for reference
•Bring a dictionary, pad and pen
•Arrive on time (or early); plan to stay until the end
•Let the non-native speakers do most of the talking
•Don’t monopolize the conversation in either language
•Do not interrupt when someone is talking
•Intermediate level in the non-native language is preferred

Activities In May

We have two special activities in May for the groups.

May 6, immediately after the conversation groups, we will be having a "tasting" of South African wines. The cost if Euro 5 to cover the wine. Please sign up on the WICE website or with Sherry or Mary. Space is limited.

May 27, after the groups we will have our annual Spring Gouter and Book Exchange. Bring a dish or bottle of wine to share and up to three books. While snacking on the delicious food prepared by group members, you can browse the books for your summer reading. Books in French and English are welcome.

Also, Anglophones are needed. Please make a special effort to support our conversation exchange.

The WICE French-English Conversation Groups will hold our annual Noel Sing-Along and Gouter on Friday, December 3.

Conversation will start at 4:30 PM.

News From The Groups

We had a great start to the year yesterday with 32 participants.

We’ve changed the time for the groups. This year it will start at 4:30 PM and end at 6:15 PM. This takes into consideration an arrival time of 4:30 PM and the time it takes to form the groups and start the conversation. If we all switch language at 5:30 PM, the new time should work out well and everyone will get the full 45 minutes in each language.

We ask that you bring your membership card with you on your next visit. We will be checking. If you’ve recently renewed, just tell us. You can renew your membership on the WICE website, or at the WICE office. It takes approximately 10 days to receive your membership card.

WICE will hold our annual Open House on Tuesday, September 28. It will be held at The American Church. Note that there will not be a French-English conversation group on this day. Instead, we will hold conversation groups for attendees to see during the Open House. You can come and participate in these groups or come and visit with your WICE friends.

You will receive a 5% discount for all classes you register for during the Open House.

We start the conversation groups at 16h30.

PLEASE ARRIVE ON TIME OR EARLY.

We try to balance each group with Francophones and Anglophones to assure that you can practice speaking with native speakers. We are noticing that quite a few people are arriving more than 10 minutes late.

This makes it very hard to have good quality, small groups, and consider people's special requests. It is quite disruptive.

Also, please plan on staying until 18h.

The groups are going well this fall.

We have had between 35-40 participants per group with many new members!

The conversation groups will continue, without interruption during the school holidays.

We will be closed on Christmas Day, December 25th and New Year’s Day, January 1st.

The Noel Sing Along and “Gouter” is scheduled for December 4th.

This is one of our most popular events. On this day, we will have our normal conversation groups from 4:30 PM to 6 PM. Following the groups we have a pot luck. Bring your favorite dish (finger food is better) or a bottle or wine, juice or water. Then, we will enjoy singing holiday songs in both French and English.

We also need volunteers to help with the groups. Due to the size of the groups, we need a few people to help set up the room before the conversation groups, greet members and assign groups. If you can help, we need people on Tuesdays and Fridays. You can volunteer for one or both days. If you can help, please let either Sherry or Mary know.

Also, WICE is in need of a volunteer to manage and schedule the rooms that WICE uses. This is a very critical job. It requires fluent french, intermediate English skills. If you are interested, let Sherry know ASAP.

One of the most urgent jobs is the Schedule & Space Coordinator

WICE needs a French/English speaking volunteer who can handle everything to do with scheduling and room booking on a permanent basis. This job involves:

Coordination with WICE Program department directors
Requests for rooms and arrangements for paying
Maintenance and updating the spreadsheet (Excel file) related to the monthly booking per location
Liaison with the treasurer to make sure payments are made and recorded

More details

This person will manage the relationship with the places where we rent space (Forum 104, churches, etc…), organize the scheduling of classes there, and keep Program Directors informed of where things stand re room rentals. Will also work with Course Assistants letting them know what to expect, what to be careful of, what is expected of us (i.e. clean up space, re-arrange chairs/desks etc., put things away if we have a cupboard etc.).

Skills needed

Knowledge of Paris.
Creativity in terms of finding as many venues as possible for us
Comfortable with Excel and the Internet

Time commitment

It is necessary to visit the locations, to meet the location correspondents and to be in touch with teachers. It is possible either to work mainly from home (2 to 3 hours per week) or to go to the office.

Conversation Group Update

Every day, we have between 30 and 40 participants. We have many new people, both French and Anglophone.

In order to start on time, and to get everyone into a group that meets their needs (!), we ask that you please, please come on time or early! Early is better.

Remember that we will continue the groups during the vacances scolaires.

Open House is Saturday -- See New Time For This Event

PLEASE NOTE THE TIME CHANGE FOR THIS EVENT

The Open House will take place starting at 12:30 PM and will end at 5:30 PM.

If you wish to participate in the Conversation Group, it will start at 2 PM.

Wine tasting will start at 3 PM.

Anglophones, We Need You!

The WICE French-English conversation groups are going strong. We have had more than 30 participants at each session this fall.

We have many new members.

But, we need Anglophones!

We try to keep the groups small, with 5 to 6 people in each group. If you do the math, that means we need at least 6 Anglophones at each session. More would be better.

The groups are a free benefit for WICE members, you may come as often as you like.

ALSO -- If you are a beginner or intermediate speaker, in either language, we are starting a group for "debutantes". In this group, the speaking will be slower, with more corrections. You will be able to practice and improve your speaking and comprehension.

Join or Renew Your WICE Membership On-Line

If you haven't visited the WICE website recently, now you have a good reason to do it-- you can now renew your membership or sign up for classes on-line. It's quick, easy and safe.

You simply go to the WICE website at http://www.wice-paris.org/wice/
then click on "Become a Member" at the top of the screen. You will see that you can join WICE as an individual or a couple.

Once you do this, follow the directions. Your WICE membership package with your new card will arrive within ten working days.

Spring Gouter and Book Exchange

We traditionally have a "gouter" in the Spring, but this year we've decided to add a little something extra -- a book exchange.

If you're like me, you have stacks of previously read books hanging around your apartment. Why not share your books with your friends from WICE? Why not pick up a few new books for your summer reading? Bring your classics and/or the books you couldn't put down.

Socialize with friends from WICE at the Spring Gouter and Book Exchange

Date: Friday, June 12
Time: Conversation Group 4 PM to 5:30 PM
Gouter 5:30 PM to 7 PM
Book Exchange 5:30 to 7 PM

Bring a dish or snack to share (finger food is best), or a bottle of wine, water or juice.

Bring up to three books – French or English - that you think WICE members might like to read.

Choose from the books that others have brought.

We also need volunteers for this event. Please email Sherry at sreckas@gmail.com if you can help the day of the gouter.

Here's what we need:

People to help set up the food and the book exchange
People to help clean up at the end (7 PM to 7:30 PM)
Someone to bring tablecloths, paper plates, plastic cups, corkscrews that aren't too complicated (!)
Someone with a car -- in case we have a lot of leftover books, we need someone with a car to help transport them so that we can store them to give to a charity. This will take about 30 minutes after the gouter is over.

Conversation Groups On May 1 and May 8

There will be conversation groups on Friday, May 1 and Friday, May 8.

On May 8, there will be a change of room. On this day only, we will meet in room #1, which is the first door to the right on the RDC as you enter the building.

The groups on May 1 will be in room #10, the normal room.

If you missed completing the WICE questionnaire on Friday, May 24th and would like to do this, please email Sherry or Mary and we'll send you the form for completion.

Tickets Available for Choral Performance

One of our members, Annie Schneider, is performing with the Choeur et Orchestre Philharmonique International (Artistes de l'UNESCO pour la Paix).

There will be a concert on Thursday, June 11 at 20 h 30 at UNESCO, Grand Auditorium, 125 ave de Suffren, 7eme.

The concert will be VIVA VERDI, extraits en concert from La Traviata, Il Trovatore, Nabucco and Aida.

Annie has a few tickets available at a reduced price of Euro 25, this is a Euro 5 reduction if you purchase the tickets directly from her. If you are interested, you can email her at a.b.schneider@free.fr or ask her during the next conversation group.

Membership Renewals

To participate in the WICE French/English conversation groups you must be a member of WICE.

If you are new to the groups, or need to renew your membership, there are several ways to do this.

You can go to the WICE website
http://www.wice-paris.org/

Then, click on Registration and you can download and print the registration form. You can fill it out, fax it back to WICE, take it to the WICE office or bring it to a volunteer during one of the groups. WICE accepts checks and carte bleue.

The volunteers will also have forms with them if this is easier for you.

While you're at the website, check out all the great classes that WICE has to offer.
